Super Bowl 53 on ESPN Upstate

Patriots VS Rams

January 31, 2019 - 3:43 pm

The New England Patriots, champions of the AFC, will play the Los Angeles Rams, winners of the NFC, for all the marbles in Super Bowl 53 on Sunday.

The Patriots will be playing in their 3rd straight Super Bowl, and their 11th in franchise history (an NFL record).

The Rams find themselves in their 4th Super Bowl in franchise history, and their first Super Bowl since 2001, in which they lost to Tom Brady and the Patriots.

These two teams have had completely different paths since they met in the 2001 Super Bowl.

For the Patriots, that Super Bowl victory launched their historic dynasty that has lasted to this day. That dynasty includes: 16 division titles, 9 conference championships, and 5 Super Bowl wins.

The Patriots will look to build on their nearly 2 decades long dynasty, by defeating the Rams and join the Pittsburgh Steelers as the only 2 teams with 6 Super Bowl titles.

The Rams have had a completely different journey.

Since 2001, the Rams have only made the playoffs 4 times, experienced a 12 year playoff drought, and moved back to Los Angeles from Saint Louis.

The 12 year playoff drought for the Rams is a thing of the past now, as they have one of the best young coaches and rosters in all of the NFL.

The Rams high power offense, with weapons like Todd Gurley, Jared Goff, and Brandin Cooks, will look to avenge their 2001 Super Bowl loss as they get ready to go head to head with the Patriots on Sunday.

This season has been uncharacteristic for New England, as they have not been putting up the gaudy passing numbers that they usually do.

However, they have managed to establish an incredible rushing attack led by rookie running back Sony Michel.

Michel isn’t the only player to credit for the success of New England's rushing attack. The Patriots offensive line has been incredible this year. They have graded out to be one of the best offensive lines in all of football.

If the Rams wish to defeat the Patriots in Super Bowl 53, they must use their young and talented defensive line, led by all-pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald, to apply pressure on Tom Brady, and shut down the Patriots running game.
The Super Bowl is set to kickoff this Sunday at 6:30PM EST, and you can listen to Westwood One’s live coverage on ESPN Upstate starting immediately after the Clemson Basketball game around 2:30pm.
