Gleyber Torres: Hitting Alex Bregman in MLB: The Show was 'nothing personal'

New York Yankees' infielder Gleyber Torres says you shouldn't read too far into his video game exploits.

On a recent stream of MLB: The Show, Torres was pitching against Houston Astros' infielder Alex Bregman. On the first pitch against Bregman, Torres hit him, and paused for a minute to crack up. Rather quickly, he said not to take things too seriously:

Of course, if Torres was facing Mike Trout or Juan Soto, he wouldn't have gone out of his way to hit them with a pitch. He actually wasn't yet at the major league level when the Astros defeated the Yankees in the 2017 ALCS, but he debuted a season later, and clearly inherited the distaste for the American League rivals. Torres was on the 2019 team that again lost to the Astros in the ALCS, just weeks before their sign-stealing scandal from the aforementioned 2017 World Series run was revealed.

Because of COVID-19, the Yankees and Astros haven't played since the sign-stealing scandal was made public. During the pandemic-shortened regular season, team's only played opponents in their geographic region. The Yankees lost to the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, which prevented them from meeting with the Astros in the ALCS for a third time in four years. The Astros are slated to come to the Bronx for a three-game series starting on May 4, 2021.
