Opportunity Ahead For No.23 Furman

Paladins Look to Strengthen Resume

December 12, 2018 - 11:33 am

It is roughly a third of the way through the regular season, and the Furman men’s basketball team (11-0) stands as 1 of only 9 undefeated teams in the country.

It is safe to say few people saw the Paladins getting off to this kind of a start, especially with the Villanova Wildcats, the reigning national champions, on the schedule. But not only did Furman upset the then-number 1 team in the country, but they have handled their business against every other team on their schedule thus far.

Barring any injuries, it is safe to assume that Furman is more talented and seasoned than any of Southern Conference team, and they should make it through conference play relatively unscathed.

32 conferences receive automatic bids to the NCAA tournament, all of which are reserved for their conference champion, including the Southern Conference. But what if the Paladins slip up in the SoCon tournament and lose their automatic bid?

It seems like almost every year, a team that SHOULD win their conference tournament fails to do so. That is why Furman could use another solid win over a major college basketball team from the SEC.

In about a week’s time, The Paladins have a very important game on the road against their last major non-conference threat, the LSU Tigers.

A win against the Tigers would strengthen their resume, and would makes the Paladins harder to ignore as an at-large bid on selection Sunday.

If Furman can manage to beat LSU, and finish their regular season without more than 2-3 losses, their odds of going to the NCAA tournament goes way up, regardless of if they win their conference tournament or not.

The Paladins have only a home game, against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, between them and their showdown with LSU on Friday, December 21st.
