Notre Dame knocks off Clemson on St. Patrick's Day weekend

March 17, 2019 - 4:32 pm

On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the luck stay with the Irish as the Tigers suffer their first series loss in ACC Play.

Game one was all Notre Dame as starting pitcher Tommy Sheehan pitched a complete game on a 9-2 victory over Clemson. Notre Dame took the lead in the second and never gave it back. Two costly fielding errors help the Irish in the second and there was nothing Clemson could do after that to make a comeback. Davis Sharp (2-1) suffers his first loss on the season after having a solid six inning showing with eight strikeouts and only one earned run scored. But the real story in this game was the strength of Tommy Sheehan (3-1) and his dominate showing allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts.

Game two was just like game one but switch the outcome. Clemson needed a strong showing from Mat Clark and they got one. Clark (4-0) went seven innings let up only three hits and striking out seven to help the Tigers with their 5-1 victory. Clemson scored four runs in the second and then never gave the lead up. Clemson added one more insurance run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Notre Dame got one back in the eighth inning to make it 501 but that was all they could do. Kyle Wilkie went three for four with a run scored in this match.

Game three was more like a chess match than the first two games of the series. Notre Dame took the early lead on the Kavadas solo homerun in the second inning. They added one more run in the sixth when Kavadas again brought a run in, this time with a single to right to score Gilgenbach to make it 2-0 Irish. Clemson needed something in the remaining innings if they wanted to get the series win. Then in the bottom of the eight Byrd hits a double down to right field to score Davidson and Greene to tie the game. Nothing was doing for either team in the ninth so we go to extras. Notre Dame scores two in the top of the tenth to take the lead 4-2. Clemson fought until the last pitch, but nothing was going for them and the Irish take the series win 4-2.

Clemson falls to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in ACC play. Notre Dame are not two games away from being .500 as they improve to 8-10 and 4-2 in ACC play. Clemson next series is against the College of Charleston on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6 P.M. with the pregame starting at 5:30 P.M. and you can hear it live on ESPN Upstate.
