No. 25 Furman Defeats Elon

December 05, 2018 - 4:26 pm

The Furman men’s basketball team earned its first ever spot in the Associated Press top 25 on Monday. The 25th ranked Paladins showed no signs of slowing down on Tuesday night, as they cruised to a 98-77 victory over Elon.

Matt Rafferty went 9 for 11 from the field, and led the team in scoring with 18 points. Clay Mounce added 17 points and 9 rebounds helping the Paladins advance to 9-0 on the year.

This win caps an historic few weeks for the Paladins, who in addition to being ranked for the first time in school history, defeated the reigning national champion Villanova Wildcats and Loyola-Chicago, which appeared in last season’s Final Four.

Furman is the first SoCon school to be ranked since the Stephen Curry led Davidson Wildcats grabbed the number 22 spot in December of 2008.

The Paladin’s great start to the season is exactly that, a start. There are bigger goals in mind for this veteran group, such as a conference title and ultimately their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1980.

Furman will have more opportunities down the road to build their resume with games against LSU, Wofford, and other conference rivals. In the meantime, the Paladins get set for their road match up against USC Upstate on December 8th.
