Jordan Spieth didn’t get off to the best start at the 2019 U.S. Open first round and took out his frustration on caddie Michael Greller.

Suffice to say, Spieth pointed the blame squarely at Greller for his 1-over 72 start.

“Two perfect shots, Michael,” Spieth barked at Greller. “You got me in the water on one and over the green on the other.”

Fans and media proceeded to rip Spieth on Twitter.

Spieth previously won the U.S. Open in 2015. He collected 11 tour titles before his 24th birthday and has gone winless since. He recorded his first top-20 finish at last month’s PGA Championship.

A couple of bogeys on day one has Spieth playing catch-up with the field.

“Yeah, I may have looked like the bad guy there, but my intentions were that we should be in play if the ball is hit solidly, and I was out of play on both shots,” Spieth said. “We were talking about potentially one less [club on the second shot>, and I said, ‘But isn’t it playing about 60 (yards) with a fade?’ And then he said yes. “So, we both agreed on that. It was clearly a 4-iron off the tee.

"At the same time, when you hit a couple of shots exactly where you want to, and the first one is in the water and the next one is dead over the green.”

The U.S. Open concludes on Jun. 16. Whoever is victorious at Pebble Beach stands to earn a large check. The $12.5 million purse is the largest of any major tournament.
