The South Carolina Gamecocks wrapped up their regular season this past Saturday, when they defeated the Akron Zips 28-3. The win gave the Gamecocks their 7th win of season, bringing their overall record to 7-5. The conclusion to the regular season means it is bowl season, and the Gamecocks are going bowling.

On Sunday, South Carolina found out they will be traveling up to Charlotte, North Carolina, to face off against the Virginia Cavaliers(7-5) in the Belk Bowl on December 29th.

A 9 win season in 2017, created high expectations for South Carolina heading into this year, and because of those expectations, many South Carolina fans are considering this year’s 7 win season a step backwards. But fans should take pride in their teams 3rd straight bowl game, for the Gamecocks have come along way since their 3 win season in 2015- in which they lost to the citadel.

While the Belk Bowl might not be exactly what Carolina fans had hoped for, its close proximity to Columbia should give fans a great opportunity to see their team in a bowl game without having to pay money for a hotel.

In addition to its convenient location, the Gamecocks have an opportunity to play a solid opponent from the ACC.

The Virginia Cavaliers, coming off of their best regular season since 2011, is looking to win their first bowl game in over a decade. Third-year head coach, Bronco Mendenhall, has the Cavalier football program moving in the right direction, but a win over the Gamecocks would certainly help put Virginia back on the college football map. With Virginia expected to give South Carolina it’s best shot, the Gamecocks best show up ready to play in Charlotte.
